Can your coffee catch on fire?

If you’re drinking your coffee black, you shouldn’t need to have your fire extinguisher close by, but if you’re adding a synthetic concoction of chemicals, (aka “non-dairy creamer”), then you can probably use the stuff to start your next campfire! Let’s take a closer look at these toxic ingredients.

Partially-hydrogenated soybean oil: a trans fat that promotes inflammation and all manner of health problems. Most soy is genetically engineered and highly contaminated with highly toxic herbicides like Roundup.

High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS): This highly refined sweetener (most likely from genetically-modified corn) is harder on your liver than regular sugar and is metabolized directly into fat–the bad kind!

Dipotassium phosphate: doesn’t sound like something we should be eating! This chemical is used to stabilize creamer and keep it from clumping. Pay attention–it’s also used in fertilizers and cosmetics!

Mono- and diglycerides: used to blend things together that normally don’t mix (like oil and water) and may be synthetically produced (not real) or made from things like partially-hydrogenated oil.

Natural flavors: This may sound harmless, but it could mean anything from MSG to castoreum (anal secretions from beavers that smell like vanilla)–Ugh!

Sodium caseinate: extracted from milk protein to use as thickening and whitening agents. It is usually treated with solium hydroxide, which can interfere with nutrient absorption. Also, casein is the primary protein found in milk that is associated with allergies and autoimmune reactions.

Sodium stearoyl lactylate (SSL): Because of its mildly sweet taste, this additive is used to replace fat and sugar. Oh, and it’s also used as a cleanser, foaming agent, and emulsifier in cosmetics.

What if you don’t like black coffee? How about some almond, rice, hazelnut, or coconut milk? Even soy milk is fine if it’s certified non-GMO. You can buy some delicious non-dairy cream made from cashews. Add honey or blackstrap molasses instead of refined sugar for a nutrient boost. Coffee beans tend to be heavily sprayed with pesticides, so buy organic. When you prepare it right, you can enjoy its many researched benefits. These include lower risks for many cancers, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases, and strokes. Coffee (without the sugar) has also been shown to reduce blood glucose levels in Type 2 Diabetes. So, rather than give it up, clean it up!
