‘Tis the season for sneezing, watery eyes, sinus congestion, and other miseries!

Respiratory allergies result when the immune system overreacts to environmental substances, causing histamine to be released.  Symptoms, including mucous, help to discharge these irritants from the body.  When mucous becomes stagnant, infection can set in.  Many over-the-counter allergy medications are designed to stop undesirable symptoms, but prevention is even better!

There is a strong connection between the health of the digestive and respiratory systems.  Consider a spring detox to help ease the toxic overload on these systems, including the colon and liver, by eating a diet of whole, unprocessed, fiber-rich foods, including at least 50% fruits and vegetables.

Drink at least four to eight ounces of pure water every hour to help keep mucous thin and moving.  Add fresh lemon juice or a teaspoonful of organic apple cider vinegar to a cup of water one to three times a day to help with detoxification.

Quercetin is a naturally occurring bioflavonoid found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, and cauliflower, as well as onions, green tea, and citrus fruits.  It can also be purchased as a supplement, and is best taken as prevention two to three weeks before allergy season begins.  Research has shown that it stabilizes the release of histamine to help control allergy symptoms.  Other studies have found it to be effective in helping to control peanut allergies.

Brew a cup of organic green tea, add a teaspoonful of local raw honey and a dash or two of cayenne pepper.  This simple remedy has provided relief for many from sinus infections.   (Do not give honey to children under one year of age.)


Drink two to three cups of organic stinging nettle leaf tea a day.  Research has shown that this mineral-rich plant can naturally control histamine.  Nettle leaf can also be purchased as a freeze-dried supplement or tincture in health food stores, and may be especially beneficial in cases of hay fever.

Is this ingredient a hidden source of weight gain?

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is an artificial flavor enhancer that, when fed to laboratory mice, caused them to become grossly obese and develop lesions in the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that regulates appetite and metabolism.  When metabolized, MSG releases formaldehyde which can cause DNA damage to cells.  Formaldehyde can also be stored in fat cells, especially in the hips and thighs.  Research has revealed the presence of MSG in some baby formulas!  Could this be setting the stage for obesity in our children?

MSG may be found under many names, including hydrolyzed vegetable protein, autolyzed protein, soy protein isolate, yeast extract, calcium caseinate, hydrolyzed corn, natural flavor, spices, plant protein extract, textured protein, yeast extract, yeast food, malt extract, broth, stock, seasoning, accent, and gelatin.  It’s not easy to find a packaged food that doesn’t contain one of these ingredients.  That’s because when a food is processed, it loses its flavor, relying on artificial flavors to make it taste good!
